Zoloft Drug Information
These days there is no excuse to suffer sadness alone as many clinical professionals such as cognitive behavioral therapists and psychiatrists can help with the problem. There are now a number of depression medications on the market which doctors can prescribe to help with the condition. Today after many years of research and study, depression can be beaten but this does need an early diagnosis for this but unfortunately for some people the cost might not make it possible. The range of depression treatments and therapies currently used by psychiatrists primarily revolve around cognitive behavior and interpersonal therapy. Zoloft is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Zoloft affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
In a short space of time, sometimes as little as twenty weeks, the patient can start to see enormous positive progress in beating their condition. Before anything else is done it is necessary to have tests run by a specialist in depression so that it is made clear exactly the type of treatment is required. Your doctor will be able to recommend what type of treatment and depression medication required as they do differ considerably and no-one wants to make the situation worse. The number of anti-depressant medications available is a sure indication that this is a large problem and that there is no cure-all drug to beat the problem.
The tricyclics are not as popular as the newer serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or the monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Sometimes it is necessary to take a combination of drugs as this is the most effective method of controlling the problem. In these circumstances it may be necessary for the doctor to prescribe two or more drugs to help an individual patient.
If the doctor feels it will help he may raise or lower the dosage of the medication he has prescribed in order to best meet the patient’s personal requirement. While it may be normal and expected for doctors to try this mix and matching, the patients are warned against playing with their depression medication dosages. A warning to all depression sufferers though is to not confuse anti-anxiety or sedative medication as a treatment. The problem occurs where they are given as part of the treatment with other drugs and may be confused with anti-depressants, which is not the case as the problem they deal with is more defined.
The reason for using these depression medication drugs is merely to calm the nerves of depressed patients not to help cure the depression itself. .There are actually some common side-effects, usually coming from the tricyclic variety. Some people do not mind these side-effects from these drugs, however if it does become too much of a bother they can result in ruining a persons ability to function properly. In any situation like this the first course of action is to report it to your physician as soon as possible.
